Early Life
Zhang Yiming was born on April 1, 1983, in Longyan, Fujian, China. His parents were civil servants, and he was their only child. He showed an early interest in technology. In 2001, Zhang enrolled at Nankai University in Tianjin, where he majored in microelectronics engineering and software engineering. He graduated in 2005 with a BEng in computer engineering. He met his wife at university.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Zhang started his career at Kuxun, a digital travel booking startup, where he worked as a software engineer. Within a year, he became the technical director. Later, he worked briefly at Microsoft, but he found it restrictive. In 2009, Zhang founded 99fang.com, a property search site. In 2012, he founded ByteDance in Beijing, with the vision of delivering relevant content to users using AI-powered recommendations. The company launched the Toutiao news app, which gained millions of users. ByteDance launched Douyin in China in 2016, which later became the international sensation TikTok.
Key Business Strategies
A key business strategy for ByteDance was utilizing machine learning for personalized content through its products. Zhang focused on global expansion, which differentiated him from other Chinese tech CEOs. ByteDance acquired Musical.ly in 2017 and merged it into TikTok, enhancing TikTok's global appeal.
Philanthropy
Zhang Yiming is involved in philanthropy. In 2021, he donated 500 million yuan (approximately $77 million) to set up an education fund in his hometown. In May 2023, he made a further donation of $28.9 million to the education fund.
