Early Life
Zhang Yiming was born on April 1, 1983, in Longyan, Fujian, China. He was the only child of civil servant parents. From a young age, Zhang showed an interest in technology and computers, demonstrating a strong aptitude for problem-solving. In 2001, he enrolled at Nankai University in Tianjin, initially studying microelectronics engineering before switching to software engineering.
Rise to Success
After graduating in 2005 with a degree in software engineering, Zhang's career began at Kuxun, where he quickly rose to become a technical director. In 2012, Zhang founded ByteDance with the vision of using AI to deliver personalized content to users. ByteDance's initial product, Toutiao, a news aggregator, gained rapid success. The launch of Douyin in China in 2016 and its international counterpart, TikTok, in 2017, propelled ByteDance to global recognition.
Key Business Strategies
Zhang's key business strategy revolved around the use of AI-driven recommendation algorithms to deliver personalized content. He focused on analyzing organizational and market principles to further reduce management work. ByteDance acquired Musical.ly and merged it into TikTok. ByteDance expanded globally, which helped the company gain a strong foothold in the Western youth market.
