Early Life
Zhang Yiming was born on April 1, 1983, in Longyan, Fujian, China. His parents were civil servants, and he was an only child. In 2001, he enrolled at Nankai University in Tianjin, where he initially studied microelectronics engineering before switching to software engineering. He graduated in 2005 with a BEng in computer engineering. He met his wife at university.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Zhang started his career in 2006 at the travel website Kuxun. He quickly rose to technical director. In 2008, he worked briefly at Microsoft but found the corporate environment stifling. He then joined the startup Fanfou, which eventually failed. In 2009, he founded 99fang.com, a real estate search business. In 2012, Zhang founded ByteDance. ByteDance developed the news aggregator Toutiao and the video-sharing platform Douyin (TikTok internationally). The global success of TikTok propelled Zhang to become one of the richest individuals in the world. Zhang stepped down as CEO of ByteDance in November 2021.
