Early Life
Jeffrey Preston Bezos was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on January 12, 1964. He was raised in Houston and Miami. He demonstrated an early aptitude for science and technology, graduating as valedictorian from Miami Palmetto High School. He then attended Princeton University, where he studied electrical engineering and computer science, graduating summa cum laude in 1986.
Rise to Success
After graduating from Princeton, Bezos worked on Wall Street. He recognized the potential of the internet in the early 1990s and decided to launch an online bookstore. In 1994, he founded Amazon in Seattle, Washington. The company quickly expanded beyond books to offer a vast array of products, earning the moniker "The Everything Store." Bezos's leadership and customer-centric approach were key to Amazon's rapid growth and dominance in the e-commerce sector. Amazon went public in 1997, and Bezos became a billionaire the following year.
Key Business Strategies
Bezos's business strategies included a focus on long-term growth over short-term profits, a relentless focus on customer satisfaction, and a willingness to invest heavily in new technologies and infrastructure. Amazon's success is also attributed to its innovation in cloud computing with Amazon Web Services (AWS), which has become a major source of revenue. Bezos stepped down as CEO in 2021, transitioning to Executive Chairman to focus on other ventures.
Philanthropy
Bezos has committed to philanthropic endeavors through the Bezos Earth Fund, a $10 billion initiative to combat climate change. He has also supported various other causes through the Day One Fund, addressing homelessness and education. In 2021, he donated $200 million to the Smithsonian Institution.
