Early Life
William Ding, also known as Ding Lei, was born on October 1, 1971, in Fenghua, Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China. He showed a keen interest in technology and electronics from a young age, even building his own transistor radios. Ding pursued his passion for technology, earning a bachelor's degree in communication technology from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Ding worked as an engineer in a local state department and later at the technology company Sybase. In 1997, at the age of 26, he founded NetEase in Guangzhou. Initially, NetEase provided email and web hosting services, but Ding recognized the growing potential of online gaming. The company's pivot into online gaming, particularly with successful titles like 'Fantasy Westward Journey', propelled NetEase's growth. The company went public on the Nasdaq exchange in 2000. In 2003, Ding Lei became the richest man in China.
