Early Life
Peter Andreas Thiel was born in Frankfurt, Germany, on October 11, 1967. When he was a baby, his family moved to the United States. He spent time in Southern Africa before returning to the U.S.. Thiel excelled in chess, achieving the rank of master. He studied philosophy at Stanford University, graduating with a B.A. in 1989. He also earned a J.D. from Stanford Law School in 1992.
Rise to Success
Thiel's entrepreneurial journey began with his co-founding of PayPal in 1998. He served as the CEO until 2002 when eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion. Thiel's stake in the company was worth $55 million at the time of acquisition. Subsequently, he became the first outside investor in Facebook in 2004, giving $500,000 for a 10.2% stake. He sold most of his Facebook shares, generating over $1 billion. In 2003, he launched Palantir Technologies, a data analysis company, and serves as its chairman.
