Melinda Ann French Gates was born on August 15, 1964, in Dallas, Texas. She is the second of four children. Her father, Raymond Joseph French Jr., was an aerospace engineer, and her mother, Elaine Agnes Amerland, was a homemaker. Melinda attended St. Monica Catholic School, where she was the valedictorian. She graduated as valedictorian from Ursuline Academy of Dallas in 1982. She earned a bachelor's degree in computer science and economics from Duke University in 1986 and an MBA from Duke's Fuqua School of Business in 1987.

Melinda French Gates began her career at Microsoft in 1987 as a multimedia product developer. She worked on products such as Microsoft Cinemania, Encarta, Publisher, Bob, Money, Works, and Word. She was later promoted to General Manager of Information Products. Melinda met Bill Gates at a trade fair in New York in 1987. They married in 1994 and divorced in 2021.
