Early Life
Melinda Ann French Gates was born in Dallas, Texas, on August 15, 1964. She has three siblings. Her father was an aerospace engineer, and her mother was a stay-at-home mom who emphasized the importance of education. Melinda showed an early interest in computers and excelled in mathematics, which led her to pursue computer science in college. She graduated as valedictorian from Ursuline Academy of Dallas in 1982.
Rise to Success
Melinda attended Duke University, earning a bachelor's degree in computer science and economics in 1986 and an MBA in 1987. She then joined Microsoft in 1987 as a multimedia product developer. During her time at Microsoft, she worked on products like Microsoft Cinemania, Encarta, Publisher, Bob, Money, Works, and Word. She left Microsoft in 1996 to focus on her family.
Key Business Strategies
While at Microsoft, Melinda developed her expertise in multimedia products and rose to the position of General Manager of Information Products. After leaving Microsoft, she co-founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with her then-husband, Bill Gates, which became the world's largest private charitable organization.
Philanthropy
From 2000 to 2024, Melinda co-chaired the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, focusing on global health, development, and education. After her divorce in 2021, she received $12.5 billion for independent philanthropy, with a focus on women and families. Melinda has also founded Pivotal Ventures, an investment firm supporting organizations advocating for women's rights. In 2024, she resigned as co-chair of the Gates Foundation.
