Early Life
Ma Huateng, known as Pony Ma, was born on October 29, 1971, in Chaoyang, Shantou, Guangdong, China. He moved to Shenzhen with his family when his father took a job as a port manager. He studied computer science at Shenzhen University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1993.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Ma worked in the telecommunications industry, developing software for pagers. In 1998, he co-founded Tencent with four classmates. Their first product, OICQ, a Chinese-interface instant messaging software, gained rapid popularity. This was later renamed QQ. By 2004, Tencent was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Under Ma's leadership, Tencent expanded to include various online services, including gaming and social media, most notably WeChat, the world's largest instant messaging platform.
