Early Life
Ma Huateng, known as Pony Ma, was born on October 29, 1971, in Chaoyang, Guangdong province, China. He moved to Shenzhen with his family during his childhood. He showed an early interest in computers and programming. He graduated from Shenzhen University in 1993 with a degree in computer science.
Rise to Success
Ma co-founded Tencent in 1998. The company's initial product was OICQ, an instant messaging service similar to ICQ, which was later rebranded as QQ. Tencent's growth continued with the launch of QQ.com and forays into the online games market. In 2004, Tencent went public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Ma's leadership saw Tencent expand its offerings, including e-commerce, online media, gaming, social networking, and online payment processing. The launch of WeChat in 2011 was a significant milestone, transforming from a messaging app to a super-app.
