Lee Jae-yong, also known as Jay Y. Lee, was born on June 23, 1968, in Seoul, South Korea. He is the only son of Lee Kun-hee, the former chairman of the Samsung Group, and Hong Ra-hee. Lee attended Kyungbock High School and later earned a degree in East Asian History from Seoul National University.
