Jan Borysovych Koum was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, on February 24, 1976, into a Jewish family. At the age of 16, he immigrated to the United States with his mother and grandmother, settling in Mountain View, California. His father remained in Ukraine. Koum's interest in computer programming began in his teens, and he taught himself the skills needed to succeed in the tech world. After working as a security tester at Ernst & Young and later as an infrastructure engineer at Yahoo!, Koum, along with Brian Acton, co-founded WhatsApp in 2009. The app quickly gained popularity for its simplicity and focus on privacy. In 2014, Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion. Koum served as CEO of WhatsApp until 2018.
