Zhong Shanshan was born in Hangzhou, China, in 1954. His early life was marked by economic hardship, forcing him to drop out of elementary school during the Cultural Revolution. He worked in construction to help support his family. Later, he attended Zhejiang Radio & TV University, where he studied Chinese.
Rise to Success
Zhong's entrepreneurial journey began in 1988 when he started his own business in Hainan, selling mushrooms, prawns, and turtles. He later worked as a sales agent for the Wahaha beverage company. In 1996, he founded a bottled water company in Hangzhou, which would later become Nongfu Spring. Nongfu Spring's success was propelled by its decision to retain natural minerals in its water. The company's initial public offering (IPO) in September 2020 significantly increased Zhong's wealth. Zhong also owns a majority stake in Beijing Wantai Biological Pharmacy Enterprise, which went public in April 2020.
