Early Life
Vagit Yusufovich Alekperov was born on September 1, 1950, in Baku, Azerbaijan SSR, one of the earliest centers of the international petroleum industry. His father, who passed away during Alekperov's youth, worked in the oil fields and inspired his son to follow in his footsteps. Alekperov graduated from the Azerbaijan Oil and Chemistry Institute with a degree in engineering in 1974.
Rise to Success
Alekperov's career began in the Caspian Sea oil fields, where he gained hands-on experience as a drilling operator. In 1979, he moved to Western Siberia, a burgeoning hub for oil exploration. By 1985, he had risen to the position of First Deputy General Director of Bashneft's production unit. In 1987, he became the General Director of Kogalymneftegaz. In 1990, he was appointed Deputy Minister of the Oil and Gas Industry of the Soviet Union, becoming the youngest to hold the position. In 1991, he founded Lukoil by consolidating three major oil fields under a single entity. He served as the president of LUKOIL from 1993 until 2022.
Key Business Strategies
Alekperov's key business strategy involved the consolidation of oil assets and the creation of a vertically integrated company, LUKOIL, to streamline operations. Under his leadership, LUKOIL expanded its operations internationally and established partnerships with major oil companies worldwide. He increased his stake in Lukoil, becoming its largest shareholder. Furthermore, LUKOIL made significant acquisitions, including Getty Petroleum Marketing in the United States.
Philanthropy
In 2007, Alekperov founded The Foundation "Our Future" to promote social entrepreneurship in Russia. He has stated that his stake in Lukoil (over 20% of the company) will be transferred to a charitable foundation.
