Early Life
Todd Bartlett Graves was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1972, and raised in Baton Rouge. From a young age, he exhibited an entrepreneurial drive, working various jobs to gain experience. Graves graduated from Episcopal School of Baton Rouge and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia.
Rise to Success
Graves conceived the idea for Raising Cane's while in college. His business plan was initially rejected by investors and received the lowest grade in his business class. Undeterred, he worked as a boilermaker in oil refineries and a commercial fisherman in Alaska to save money. He opened the first Raising Cane's near the Louisiana State University campus in 1996.
Key Business Strategies
Raising Cane's success is rooted in simplicity: a focused menu of chicken fingers, fries, coleslaw, Texas toast, and Cane's Sauce. The company's emphasis on high-quality ingredients, excellent customer service, and a strong company culture has fostered customer loyalty. Graves maintained tight control over the company, with a focus on company-owned locations to ensure consistency. The brand leverages social media and celebrity partnerships to promote its brand.
Philanthropy
Graves is actively involved in philanthropy and community service through Raising Cane's, supporting education, animal welfare, and disaster relief. He has donated $140 million to various causes.
