Early Life
Susanne Hanna Ursula Klatten (née Quandt) was born on April 28, 1962, in Bad Homburg, West Germany. She is the daughter of Herbert and Johanna Quandt, prominent figures in German industry. Klatten's upbringing was marked by privilege and a strong emphasis on business and discretion. In her youth, police thwarted an attempt to kidnap her and her mother in 1978.
Rise to Success
Klatten studied business finance and earned an MBA from IMD Business School in Lausanne. She gained experience working in advertising at Young & Rubicam in Frankfurt and later in London banks and consulting firms. After her father's death in 1982, she inherited a significant stake in BMW (12.5% initially, increasing to 19.2% after her mother's death) and a controlling stake in the pharmaceutical and chemical company Altana. She transformed Altana into a world-class corporation. In 2006, Altana sold its pharmaceutical business, distributing the proceeds to shareholders while focusing on specialty chemicals.
Key Business Strategies
Klatten's success stems from her strategic acumen in managing her inherited assets, particularly in BMW and Altana. She has played a crucial role on the supervisory board of BMW and as the sole owner and deputy chair of Altana, guiding the strategic direction of both companies. She has diversified her investments into sectors like digital identity and data security through Entrust, and carbon and graphite production through SGL Group.
Philanthropy
Susanne Klatten is involved in philanthropy, including supporting the Christian Democratic Union, and she is a member of the University Council of the Technical University of Munich.
