Early Life
Serge Godin was born in 1949 in Shipshaw, Quebec, Canada. He was one of nine children, and his father, who had a fifth-grade education, owned a lumber business. From a young age, Godin was inspired by his father's entrepreneurial spirit, which sparked his interest in business. He worked at his father's sawmill during his youth.
Rise to Success
Godin began his career in the IT sector and realized the technological gap in the market. At 26, using $5,000 from his savings, he founded CGI in 1976. From its inception, CGI focused on IT strategic consulting, evolving into a full-service IT and business process services company. Under Godin's leadership, CGI expanded significantly, completing over 100 acquisitions and growing from two employees to over 90,000 employees worldwide. He served as President and CEO until 2006, and then Executive Chairman of the Board.
Key Business Strategies
Godin's leadership style emphasizes a management approach known as the CGI Management Foundation, fostering operational excellence. His key business strategies included organic growth and acquisitions, successfully integrating over 70 acquisitions into the CGI business model. He focused on creating a positive work environment where employees could enjoy working together and share in the company's success.
Philanthropy
Godin has long been involved in charitable causes. In 2000, he established the Godin Family Foundation to alleviate poverty, advance education, and improve the health of disadvantaged children and teens. The foundation has supported numerous schools, hospitals, and youth organizations.
