Early Life
Born as Zeng Yuqun in 1968 in a mountain village in Fujian Province, China, Robin Zeng's early life was marked by humble beginnings. He was a strong student with big ambitions, gaining entrance to Shanghai Jiaotong University, where he majored in shipbuilding. After graduating, he started his career in a state-owned shipbuilding company.
Rise to Success
Zeng's career took a pivotal turn when he entered the electronics industry, working for an electronics manufacturer. He later earned a Ph.D. in physics from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1999, he founded Amperex Technology Limited (ATL), producing lithium-ion batteries, with Apple as an early customer. In 2005, Zeng sold ATL to Japan's TDK for $100 million but continued to manage the car-battery division. Recognizing the growing demand for electric vehicles, Zeng founded Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) in 2011. Under his leadership, CATL became the world's largest EV battery supplier, partnering with major automakers such as BMW, Tesla, and Volkswagen.
Key Business Strategies
CATL's success is attributed to Zeng's focus on innovation, safety, and long-term value. He emphasized competition on technology advancement and the entire life cycle of a product, not just price reductions. CATL invested significantly in research and development, leading to breakthroughs in battery technology, like the TENER energy storage system. Zeng's strategic vision helped CATL expand its global footprint with manufacturing facilities and subsidiaries in Europe, North America, and other regions.
Philanthropy
Zeng, who wants to "share these riches to create a good society", has focused his philanthropy on sustainability. In April 2025, Zeng and his wife donated $137 million to Fudan University.
