Early Life
Martin Lorentzon was born on April 1, 1969, in Åsenhöga, Småland, Sweden. He grew up in Borås, Sweden, and showed an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age. His parents were Brita, a teacher, and Sven, an economist. He has two older siblings. Lorentzon attended Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, where he earned a Master of Science and engineering degree. He also studied economics at the Stockholm School of Economics and took courses in rhetoric and argumentation at Stockholm University.
Rise to Success
Lorentzon's career began with an internship at Telia in 1995. In 1999, he co-founded Tradedoubler, a digital marketing company, with Felix Hagnö. Tradedoubler achieved significant success and was awarded for its export performance. In 2006, after selling his Tradedoubler options, Lorentzon partnered with Daniel Ek to co-found Spotify. He personally financed the initial development of Spotify. He served as Spotify's CEO from 2006 to 2013 and as Chairman of the Board from 2008 to 2016. Under his leadership, Spotify transformed music consumption, offering a legal and user-friendly streaming service that attracted millions of users worldwide.
