Early Life
Lakshmi Niwas Mittal was born on June 15, 1950, in Sadulpur, Rajasthan, India. He was born into a Marwari Hindu family. Mittal studied at Shri Daulatram Nopany Vidyalaya, Calcutta from 1957 to 1964. He graduated from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, with a B.Com degree.
Rise to Success
Mittal began his career working in his family's steelmaking business. In 1976, he established his first steel mill in Indonesia. Through a series of strategic mergers and acquisitions, Mittal transformed his company into the world's largest steel producer, ArcelorMittal. He is known for consolidating the steel industry and expanding it globally. In 2006, Mittal Steel merged with Arcelor to create ArcelorMittal.

Mittal's success is attributed to his strategic vision, including mergers and acquisitions, global consolidation, and a focus on efficiency. He has been a leader in the restructuring of the steel industry. In 2024, ArcelorMittal had an annual crude steel production of 58 million metric tonnes.
Philanthropy
Mittal is actively involved in philanthropy. He has donated to the Great Ormond Street Hospital, supporting the Mittal Children's Medical Centre and UNICEF, particularly for child malnutrition in India. He is also a member of the Global Advisory Council to support the Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute at Harvard University. In 2009, the Foundation along with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan founded the Usha Lakshmi Mittal Institute of Management in New Delhi.
