Klaus-Michael Kuehne was born on June 2, 1937, in Hamburg, Germany. He is the grandson of August Kühne, who co-founded the international transport company Kühne + Nagel in 1890. His father, Alfred Kühne, was also involved in the family business.

Klaus-Michael Kuehne joined Kuehne + Nagel as a junior partner in 1963. He rose through the ranks and became the CEO of the company in 1996. Under his leadership, Kuehne + Nagel grew into a global logistics giant. He has transformed Kuehne + Nagel into one of the world’s leading logistics companies. In 2008, he became a partner in the shipping company Hapag-Lloyd. In 2022, he doubled his stake in Deutsche Lufthansa AG, becoming the largest individual shareholder of the airline.
