Early Life
Kim Taek-jin was born on March 14, 1967, in Seoul, South Korea, during a period of rapid economic growth and technological advancement. He studied electrical engineering at Seoul National University, earning both a bachelor's and a master's degree. During his studies, he demonstrated early technical aptitude by developing software tools related to Korean language processing. After graduation, he worked on the Hangul Word Processor, a significant software in Korea's tech history.
Rise to Success
In March 1997, Kim founded NCSoft. His vision was to create immersive online gaming experiences. NCSoft launched the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) Lineage in September 1998, which became an instant hit. The game was popular in South Korea and Taiwan, and its success led to NCSoft being listed on the Korea Stock Exchange in 2003. Kim's leadership and foresight in the gaming industry drove NCSoft to become a major player in the global market. He sold a majority of his shares in 2012 but still holds a significant stake.
Key Business Strategies
Kim Taek-jin's strategic approach included focusing on MMORPGs. Kim spearheaded the creation of the NC Dinos baseball team in 2011. In 2024, he brought in a co-CEO to enhance global expansion and innovation in non-gaming areas like AI and diversify revenue streams. Philanthropy
Kim is a founding member of C Program, a venture philanthropy fund launched in 2017. In 2021, he donated 2.5 billion won to establish the Nexon Children's Palliative Care Center at Seoul National University Hospital. He donated 6.3 billion won ($5.3 million) to two children's hospitals.
