Early Life
John Franklyn Mars was born on October 15, 1935, to Forrest Mars Sr. and Audrey Ruth (Meyer). He is the grandson of Frank C. Mars, the founder of Mars, Incorporated. John attended the Hotchkiss School and graduated from Yale University.
Rise to Success
John Mars inherited a stake in Mars, Inc. when his father died in 1999. He is the chairman of the company, and, along with his sister Jacqueline, each own an estimated one-third of the company. Mars, Incorporated, under his leadership, has grown into a global powerhouse, generating approximately $55 billion in annual revenue.
Key Business Strategies
John Mars has been instrumental in the company's growth, including the acquisition of VCA, Inc. for $7.7 billion in 2017. More recently, in December 2025, Mars acquired Kellanova for $35.9 billion. Mars, Inc. is known for its private ownership, which allows for a long-term strategic vision without the pressures of public markets.
Philanthropy
John Mars and his wife, Adrienne, are known supporters of the Smithsonian Institution. Additionally, Mars donated $2 million to Yale University with his brother in 1999.
