Early Life
James Joseph Truchard was born on June 25, 1943, in Austin County, Texas. He was the fourth of seven children. He earned a B.S. and an M.S. in physics, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.
Rise to Success
Truchard's career began in 1970 while earning his master's and doctorate degrees at the University of Texas. He worked at the UT Applied Research Laboratories as a managing director in acoustical measurements. In 1976, Truchard co-founded National Instruments with Jeff Kodosky and Bill Nowlin. They started by developing solutions for interfacing computers with test equipment. Truchard's leadership led National Instruments to achieve record revenue in 35 of its 37 years of operation. The company focused on innovation, growth, and expansion, and Truchard balanced the success of customers, employees, shareholders, and suppliers. He served as CEO for over four decades before retiring in 2017 and as Chairman until 2019.

Truchard's strategy focused on innovation, long-term growth, and a conservative approach to ensure the success of all stakeholders. He emphasized employee empowerment and creating a positive work environment, leading National Instruments to be recognized as a top place to work. He also made a $10 million contribution to the University of Texas at Austin to support the development of the Engineering Education and Research Center (EERC).
Philanthropy
Since retiring from National Instruments, Truchard has focused on philanthropy, especially funding Alzheimer's research. He has donated to schools in Texas, including UT Austin and Texas A&M University, as well as schools outside the state. From 2017 to 2019, Truchard donated more than 1.1 million National Instruments shares worth $40 million to the charitable Truchard Foundation.
