Early Life and Education
Ion Stoica was born in Romania and displayed an early aptitude for computer science. He earned a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest in 1989. In 1994, he immigrated to the United States and started his Ph.D. at Old Dominion University before transferring to Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). He received his Ph.D. in Electrical & Computer Engineering from CMU in 2000.
Rise to Success
Stoica's career took off at the University of California, Berkeley, where he became a professor in 2000. His research interests include cloud computing, networking, distributed systems, and big data. He has authored or co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers. Stoica's entrepreneurial journey began with Conviva in 2006, a company focused on video distribution, where he served as CTO. In 2013, he co-founded Databricks, serving as CEO until 2016. Databricks has revolutionized the analytics space. He is also the co-founder of Anyscale (2019). Stoica is an ACM Fellow and has received numerous awards for his work.
