Frank Wang, also known as Wang Tao, was born in 1980 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, China. From a young age, Wang showed a keen interest in aviation and model airplanes. He had a passion for flight and airborne devices, which later fueled his career.

Wang's journey began at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), where he studied electronic engineering. This project caught the attention of Professor Li Zexiang, who brought Wang into the school's graduate program. In 2006, Wang moved to Shenzhen and, with a small staff, founded DJI.
