Early Life
Emmanuel Besnier was born on September 18, 1970, in Laval, Mayenne, France. He is the grandson of André Besnier, who founded Lactalis in 1933. He has a brother, Jean-Michel, and a sister, Marie. He attended the Lycée de l'Immaculée-Conception in Laval and later graduated from the ISG Business School in Paris.
Rise to Success
Besnier joined Lactalis as the director of development in 1995. He became the CEO in 2000 after his father's death. Under his leadership, Lactalis has expanded significantly through strategic acquisitions, solidifying its position as a global dairy giant. He owns 83% of Lactalis with his siblings. He has been called the "French Howard Hughes," "the Emperor of Cheese," and, thanks to his disdain for the press, "the invisible billionaire." Lactalis is now the world's largest dairy company, with products including President brie, Siggi's yogurt, and Stonyfield.
Key Business Strategies
Besnier has focused on acquisitions and international expansion, turning the family business into a global leader. He has overseen key acquisitions, including Parmalat, Stonyfield Farm, and the cheese business of Kraft Heinz. In 2024, Lactalis's revenue surpassed $34.1 billion.
Philanthropy
Besnier is known for his philanthropic efforts, donating €200,000 annually to the Francis-Le-Basser football stadium in Laval. He was named "Mayennais of the Year" in 2006 by the local Rotary Club.
