Early Life
Dietmar Hopp was born on April 26, 1940, in Heidelberg, Germany. He grew up in Hoffenheim, a small village in Baden-Württemberg. His father was a member of the Nazi Party's paramilitary organization Sturmabteilung. Hopp studied telecommunications engineering at the University of Karlsruhe, graduating in 1966 with a degree in telecommunications engineering. Before his entrepreneurial ventures, Hopp worked as a software developer and consultant at IBM.
Rise to Success
In 1972, Hopp co-founded SAP SE with Hans-Werner Hector, Hasso Plattner, Klaus Tschira, and Claus Wellenreuther, all former IBM colleagues. SAP, initially known as Systemanalyse und Programmentwicklung, aimed to develop real-time data processing software for businesses. Hopp served as CEO of SAP from 1988 to 1998 and later as chairman of the supervisory board until 2003. He retained a significant shareholding in the company even after stepping down from the board in 2005.

Over the years, the foundation has donated hundreds of millions of Euros to various charitable causes. He is also known for his backing of the TSG 1899 Hoffenheim football club, investing in its development and the construction of its stadium.
