Early Life
Dieter Schwarz was born on September 24, 1939, in Heilbronn, Germany. He joined his father's wholesale business, Lidl & Schwarz KG, in the 1960s. Growing up in post-war Germany, Schwarz witnessed the hardships of rebuilding a nation, shaping his values of perseverance and financial prudence. After completing his secondary education, he pursued a commercial apprenticeship within his father's company.
Rise to Success
In 1973, Schwarz opened his first discount store, Lidl, in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. Inspired by the Aldi model, he focused on a low-cost, high-volume business model. After his father's death in 1977, Schwarz became CEO and expanded the business beyond Germany. In 1984, he expanded the group by acquiring Kaufland, a hypermarket chain.
