Early Life
Born on March 13, 1985, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Chris Wanstrath developed an early passion for video games and computers. He attended St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, graduating in 2003. Wanstrath briefly studied English at the University of Cincinnati but left to pursue a career in programming.
Rise to Success
In 2005, Wanstrath moved to San Francisco and worked at CNET Networks on GameSpot and Chowhound. In 2007, he co-founded GitHub with Tom Preston-Werner, P.J. Hyett, and Scott Chacon. GitHub, launched in April 2008, revolutionized software development by providing distributed version control using Git. Wanstrath served as CEO until 2012, then as president, returning as CEO in 2014. Under his leadership, GitHub grew to over 20 million users and $300 million in annual recurring revenue before its acquisition by Microsoft.
Key Business Strategies
Wanstrath's success stems from identifying a critical need within the developer community—efficient tools for collaborative coding. GitHub's freemium model, offering both free and paid plans, fueled rapid growth. His focus on developers and creating a user-friendly platform played a crucial role. GitHub's culture of open-source and collaboration was also key to its success.
Philanthropy
In 2024, Wanstrath co-founded the Ladybird Browser Initiative, pledging $1 million to support independent web browser development.
