Early Life
Charlwin Mao, born in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China in 1985, also known as Mao Wenchao, attended Shanghai Jiao Tong University, where he majored in Mechatronics beginning in 2003. He participated in international exchange programs and later pursued MBA studies at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business, graduating in 2007 with a degree in Computer Science and Engineering.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Mao worked at Bain & Company and Bain Capital. His travels inspired him to start a business that offered shopping advice to Chinese tourists traveling abroad. In 2013, he co-founded Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) with Miranda Qu. The platform quickly gained popularity, and has approximately 300 million active monthly users as of 2024. In 2020, he was recognized as one of China's Top 10 business elites under 40.
Key Business Strategies
Mao's leadership at Xiaohongshu has focused on integrating social networking with e-commerce, creating a platform where users share shopping experiences and product recommendations. This strategy has helped the platform become a key player in China's e-commerce market. The name 'Xiaohongshu' (Little Red Book) was inspired by the colors of Stanford University and Bain Capital. In addition, the app's success has been attributed to its user-generated content and focus on authentic reviews, which has built trust among consumers.
