Early Life and Education
Andy Fang was born in 1992 in San Jose, California, to Taiwanese-American parents. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and attended The Harker School, graduating in 2010. Fang excelled academically and later attended Stanford University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. As a freshman, he met Stanley Tang, with whom he built a social calendar app, and Tony Xu, in an engineering and business course.
Rise to Success
In 2013, while still a student at Stanford, Fang co-founded DoorDash with Stanley Tang, Tony Xu, and Evan Moore. The initial idea, PaloAltoDelivery.com, aimed to address the lack of delivery options for local businesses. DoorDash quickly gained traction, expanding to numerous cities and becoming a leading player in the food delivery market. Fang served as the company's Chief Technology Officer (CTO) from May 2013 to February 2019, playing a crucial role in developing the DoorDash platform.
Key Business Strategies
DoorDash's success is attributed to its focus on local businesses and efficient delivery logistics. The company's strategies include managing delivery operations, building partnerships with restaurants, and expanding service offerings. DoorDash went public in December 2020, marking a significant milestone and solidifying Fang's status as a billionaire.
Philanthropy
Fang is involved in philanthropic efforts, particularly in education. In 2021, he gifted $10 million to The Harker School to establish The Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund, supporting need-based financial aid for students. He hopes the endowment can help families from underserved communities achieve the American dream.
