Allan Wong was born in Hong Kong. He pursued higher education in the United States, earning a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Hong Kong and a Master of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also holds an honorary doctorate from Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Wong's career took off in 1976 when he co-founded VTech Holdings with Stephen Leung. Starting with a modest investment of $40,000, VTech initially focused on manufacturing home-gaming consoles and later expanded into electronic learning products and cordless phones. Under Wong's leadership, VTech became a global leader in its industry. In 1998, Business Week named him one of the “World's Top 25 Executives.”
