Alain Ernest Wertheimer was born on September 28, 1948, in Paris, France, into a Jewish family. His father was Jacques Wertheimer and his mother, Eliane Fischer. His grandfather, Pierre Wertheimer, co-founded the House of Chanel with Coco Chanel.
Rise to Success
Alain Wertheimer joined Chanel in the 1970s and became chairman in 1974. He and his brother Gérard took over the business after their father's death. Under his leadership, Chanel hired Karl Lagerfeld as creative director in 1983, which revitalized the brand.
