Early Life
Ajay Gopikisan Piramal was born on August 3, 1955, in Rajasthan, India. He entered his family's textile business in 1977, founded by his grandfather. After his father's death in 1979 and his brother's death from cancer a few years later, Ajay took over the business. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Science from Jai Hind College and a Master's degree in Management Studies from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, University of Mumbai, and attended the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School in 1992.
Rise to Success
Ajay Piramal's rise to success involved a strategic shift from textiles to pharmaceuticals. A pivotal moment was the acquisition of Nicholas Laboratories in 1988. In 2010, he sold the domestic formulations business of Piramal Healthcare to Abbott Labs for $3.8 billion. He also invested in Vodafone India and later sold his stake at a significant profit.
