Early Life and Career
Zhang Yong, born in Jianyang, Sichuan, China, in the late 1960s or early 1970s, started his career as a welder. He did not have extensive formal education, dropping out of high school. In 1994, he quit his job at a tractor factory and, with seed money from friends, opened the first Haidilao restaurant. This initial venture, a small hot pot eatery, marked the beginning of his remarkable entrepreneurial journey.
Rise to Success
Haidilao quickly gained popularity, distinguishing itself through exceptional customer service. Zhang's focus on employee incentives and a family-like culture contributed to the rapid growth of the chain. By 2018, Haidilao had expanded to over 300 locations. The company's initial public offering (IPO) in Hong Kong in 2018, which raised nearly $1 billion, further solidified Zhang's position as a leading figure in the restaurant industry. Haidilao is known for its spicy dishes and attentive customer service, including free manicures.
Key Business Strategies
Haidilao's success stems from several key strategies. Zhang prioritized employee empowerment, offering profit-sharing for managers and fostering a strong company culture. The chain expanded rapidly, both within China and internationally, with locations in various countries. The company also focused on innovation, introducing robot-aided services and a strong digital presence. A key part of the brand is giving autonomy to employees so that they can best serve customers.
Philanthropy
Zhang Yong's philanthropic efforts are channeled through Haidilao's corporate initiatives. The Bingwen Education Assistance Foundation, named after his grandfather, supports rural education in China, including building libraries and funding schools. During the 2020 COVID-19 outbreak, Haidilao donated to relief efforts in China.
