Early Life and Education
Zhang Lei was born in 1972 in Zhumadian, Henan province, China. He showed early academic promise, earning a scholarship to Renmin University of China, where he received a bachelor's degree in economics in 1994. His pursuit of knowledge led him to Yale University, where he obtained an MBA and an MA in International Relations in 2002. During his time at Yale, Zhang interned at the Yale Investments Office, an experience that would shape his future in finance.
Rise to Success
In 2005, Zhang founded Hillhouse Capital with seed capital from Yale University's endowment fund. The firm, named after Hillhouse Avenue in New Haven, Connecticut, adopted a long-term, research-driven investment approach, focusing on sectors such as technology, healthcare, and consumer goods. Under Zhang's leadership, Hillhouse Capital has grown to become one of Asia's largest private equity firms, managing billions of dollars in assets. The firm is known for its early investments in companies like Tencent and JD.com.

Zhang is also a dedicated philanthropist. In 2014, he donated US$8.88 million to the Yale School of Management, which was the largest donation from a graduate at the time. He established the Gaoli Academy at Renmin University. In 2017, he donated $43 million to Renmin University for an education fund.
