Early Life
William Philip Lauder was born on April 11, 1960, in New York City. He is the grandson of Estée Lauder, the founder of the Estée Lauder Companies, and the son of Leonard A. Lauder. He graduated from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree in economics in 1983.
Rise to Success
Lauder began his career at The Estée Lauder Companies in 1986 as a regional marketing director for Clinique USA. He then progressed through several leadership positions, including President of Origins and President of Clinique Laboratories. From 2001 to 2004, Lauder served as Group President, overseeing Clinique, Origins, and the company's retail division. He became CEO in July 2004, a position he held until 2009, after which he served as Executive Chairman until 2024. He now holds the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Key Business Strategies
Lauder focused on global expansion and brand growth. During his time as CEO, the company expanded its international presence and distribution channels and strengthened its brand portfolio. He also created the Origins brand, which was key in the creation of the store-within-a-store concept.
Philanthropy
Lauder is Co-Chairman of the Board of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
