Early Life and Education
William E. Conway Jr. was born on August 27, 1949, in Lowell, Massachusetts. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College in 1971 and later obtained an MBA with a focus on Finance from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1974. During his MBA studies, Conway worked at the First National Bank of Chicago, gaining experience in corporate finance and commercial lending.

Conway's career began at First National Bank of Chicago, where he held various positions for nearly a decade. He then moved to MCI Communications, where he served in various financial roles, eventually becoming Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. In 1987, Conway, along with David Rubenstein and Daniel A. D'Aniello, co-founded The Carlyle Group. The firm has grown into a global investment firm. He served as Co-CEO until 2018 and later as Co-Executive Chairman of the Board and Founder of The Carlyle Group.
