Wang Jianlin was born in Cangxi County, Guangyuan, Sichuan, China, on October 24, 1954. He is the eldest of five sons. His father fought in the People's Liberation Army. At 15, Wang joined the army. He served for 16 years, rising to the rank of commander.

After leaving the military in 1986, Wang became the office administrator for the Xigang District government in Dalian. In 1988, he took over a small property developer, Xigang Residential Development, with a loan of $80,000. In 1992, he renamed the company Dalian Wanda.
