Early Life
Vladimir Melnikov was born on March 10, 1948, in the village of Postavskoye, Belarus. His early life was marked by hardship, including the loss of his parents at a young age. He began working at the Rostselmash factory at around age 14.
Rise to Success
Melnikov's entrepreneurial journey began in the 1970s with underground sewing workshops. In 1988, he established the Gloria Jeans sewing cooperative. Through strategic acquisitions and retail expansion, he acquired a controlling stake in a garment factory in Novoshakhtinsk in 1995, which was a turning point for him. Gloria Jeans expanded to more than 700 stores across Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.
Key Business Strategies
A key business strategy was to expand quickly after major competitors like H&M and Zara exited the Russian market. He also transferred company shares to top management as incentives. Gloria Jeans's focus shifted to their own chain of stores, which made Melnikov successful.
Philanthropy
Melnikov founded the charitable foundation named after the Holy Great Martyr Anastasia Uzoreshitelnitsa in 2003 to assist people in difficult circumstances. In 2024, he transferred his ownership of Gloria Jeans to this charitable foundation.
