Early Life and Background
Vikas Oberoi was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, in 1969, to Ranvir Oberoi and Santosh Oberoi. His father, Ranvir Oberoi, was a key figure in Mumbai's real estate sector, initially starting as an investor and later transitioning into real estate development. Vikas grew up around the real estate business, completing his schooling and then joining his father's office. He graduated from Jai Hind College in Mumbai and later attended Harvard Business School, completing the Owner/President Management program.
Rise to Success
Vikas Oberoi became involved in his father's business in the early 1990s, eventually taking over the reins of the company. Under his leadership, Oberoi Realty Limited expanded significantly. He is known for acquiring large parcels of land and developing landmark projects, including the 60-acre former Novartis campus in Goregaon, Mumbai, and a four-acre plot in Worli from GlaxoSmithKline. These developments transformed the real estate landscape in Mumbai, featuring a mix of residential, commercial, and hospitality offerings. In 2007, Vikas decided to take the company public and renamed it Oberoi Realty.
Key Business Strategies
Oberoi's success is attributed to a combination of hard work, innovation, and a commitment to quality. He introduced concepts like branded residences, luxury retail, and mixed-use developments. Oberoi Realty has focused on developing premium office, residential, commercial, hospitality, retail, and social infrastructure projects. His company is also building Mumbai's first Ritz-Carlton hotel and residences, as well as a mall, hotel, and office tower in midtown Mumbai. Oberoi has also leased 1.5 million square feet in its suburban office tower in Mumbai to Morgan Stanley.
