Early Life
Uday Suresh Kotak was born on March 15, 1959, in Mumbai, India, into a Gujarati Hindu Lohana family involved in cotton trading. He grew up in a large joint family, which instilled values of cooperation and adaptability. During his youth, he showed aptitude in both academics and business, while also enjoying cricket and playing the sitar. He completed a Bachelor's degree in commerce from Sydenham College and an MBA from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies in 1982.
Rise to Success
Uday Kotak's entrepreneurial journey began in 1985 when he declined a lucrative job offer to start his own finance business, Kotak Capital Management Finance Ltd. (later Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd.). He saw gaps in the Indian financial market and provided innovative, customer-centric services. In 1986, he partnered with Anand Mahindra, which added credibility, and the company grew into a major financial services conglomerate. A key milestone was in 2003 when his company became the first non-banking finance company to receive a banking license, transforming into Kotak Mahindra Bank. Under his leadership, the bank expanded through innovation and strategic acquisitions, including ING Vysya Bank in 2014.
