Early Life
Torsten Toeller was born in Cologne, Germany, in 1966. After completing his schooling, he undertook an apprenticeship in retail. He gained practical experience in the industry and expanded his knowledge through study trips, especially in the USA, where he learned about the business model of pet supply stores.
Rise to Success
In 1989, Torsten Toeller founded the first Fressnapf store in Erkelenz. The business model was based on the concept of offering a wide range of pet supplies and pet food in large-area markets, a novel approach in Germany at the time. Toeller combined low prices with a large product selection and a focus on customer service. The success of the first store led to expansion. In 1992, Fressnapf began awarding franchise licenses, allowing the company to grow rapidly.

Toeller is considered a pioneer in the pet supplies trade in Europe. Under his leadership, Fressnapf has consistently focused on innovation, including introducing private labels and developing an omnichannel ecosystem. In 2024, Fressnapf's total turnover is expected to reach nearly €4.8 billion. Fressnapf's strategy includes a focus on aggressive pricing, multi-packs, and well-trained staff. The company has also restructured its headquarters in Krefeld, Germany, to create an international support center to strengthen local teams across Europe.
