Rise to Success
Tornqvist began his career in 1977 at British Petroleum. After gaining experience in the oil and gas sector, he co-founded Gunvor Group in 2000 with Gennady Timchenko. Gunvor initially focused on exporting Russian crude oil. Under Tornqvist's leadership, Gunvor expanded significantly, becoming one of the largest crude oil traders globally. In 2014, he acquired Timchenko's stake in the company. In December 2025, Tornqvist sold his holdings to a group of employees in a management buy-out, ending his long run as majority shareholder.
