Early Life and Education
Timur Askaruly Kulibayev was born on September 10, 1966, in Alma-Ata (now Almaty), Kazakh SSR, USSR. His father was a Communist Party boss. He attended a specialized physics and mathematics school. Kulibayev graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1988 with a degree in National Economy Planning. He later earned a PhD in Economics in 1999, with a dissertation on improving management in the oil industry.
Rise to Success
Kulibayev's career began in the late 1980s at a state research institute. He transitioned to the private sector in 1992 as head of Altyn-Alma, an investment company later known as ALMEX Holding Group, with interests in banking, insurance, and agriculture. He was a key figure in establishing Almaty Trade and Finance Bank. Kulibayev held key positions in the Kazakh oil and gas sector, including Vice President of Kazakhoil and head of KazTransOil. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Samruk-Kazyna, Kazakhstan's sovereign wealth fund. He also served on the Board of Directors of Gazprom.
