Early Life
Thaksin Shinawatra was born in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on July 26, 1949. His great-grandfather was an ethnic Chinese immigrant who settled in Chiang Mai. Thaksin's father, Loet Shinawatra, was a silk merchant, and the family was considered one of the richest and most influential in Chiang Mai. Thaksin attended Montfort College in Chiang Mai before pursuing higher education.
Rise to Success
Thaksin's career began in the Royal Thai Police, where he graduated from the Police Cadet Academy in 1973. He earned a master's degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1975 and a doctorate from Sam Houston State University in Texas in 1978. After leaving the police force in 1987 with the rank of Police Lieutenant Colonel, he ventured into the business world. He founded Advanced Info Service (AIS), a mobile phone operator, and the Shin Corporation, an information technology and telecommunications conglomerate. These ventures made him one of the wealthiest people in Thailand.
