Early Life
Dato' Sri Tahir, born Ang Tjoen Ming on March 26, 1952, in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, experienced humble beginnings. He was raised in a slum area by parents who made a living constructing pedicabs. Despite facing financial constraints and the challenges of his upbringing, Tahir demonstrated resilience and determination. He initially aspired to be a medical doctor but had to drop out of college due to his father's illness. He then earned a Bachelor of Arts/Science from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
Rise to Success
Tahir's business acumen became evident during his studies in Singapore, where he engaged in small trade. In 1986, he established The Mayapada Group, which expanded into various sectors, including garments, finance, automobiles, health, and media. His leadership enabled Mayapada Bank to survive the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis. In 2019, he was appointed to Indonesia's Presidential Advisory Council.

Tahir is a dedicated philanthropist, donating significantly to charitable initiatives. In 2013, he contributed over $100 million to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The Tahir Family Foundation focuses on public health, education, and poverty alleviation, and has partnered with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with a $200 million joint fund. The Mayapada Group has also built hospitals and schools and sponsored scholarships for underprivileged Indonesians, highlighting Tahir's commitment to social responsibility.
