Early Life
Sunny Varkey was born in Ranni, Kerala, India, in 1957. His parents, both educators, moved to Dubai in 1959. Growing up in Dubai, Varkey attended Infant Jesus Anglo-Indian Boys' School in Kerala and St. Mary's Catholic High School in Dubai. He completed his A-Levels at Bembridge School in the UK and the British Council in Dubai.
Rise to Success
Varkey's career began after completing his education. He initially worked at Standard Chartered Bank before taking over the management of his parents' school, Our Own English High School, in 1980. Under his leadership, the school expanded significantly.
Key Business Strategies
Varkey founded GEMS Education in 2000, expanding the business into a global network of schools. The company operates over 80 schools worldwide, offering various curricula, including British, American, and International Baccalaureate programs. GEMS Education's success stems from its ability to balance quality and affordability, catering to a diverse range of families. In 2019, CVC Capital Partners invested in GEMS Education, further solidifying its financial standing. In June 2024, a consortium led by Brookfield Asset Management invested $2 billion in the company.
Philanthropy
Sunny Varkey established the Varkey Foundation, which aims to improve global education through various initiatives. The foundation's flagship project is the Global Teacher Prize, a $1 million award recognizing outstanding educators.
