Sudhir Uttamlal Mehta was born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, in 1954, into a Gujarati Jain family. His early life was influenced by his family's business acumen and community involvement. His father, Uttambhai Nathalal Mehta, founded the Torrent Group in 1959.
Rise to Success
After earning a bachelor's degree in science from Gujarat University, Sudhir joined the family business in the early 1970s under his father's guidance. He played a key role in expanding Torrent Pharmaceuticals internationally, including setting up manufacturing plants and a research center. In 1998, after his father's death, Sudhir became the chairman of the Torrent Group. He expanded the business into the power sector and diversified into clean energy. In 2014, he stepped down as executive chairman to become Chairman Emeritus.
