Early Life
Sudhir Uttamlal Mehta was born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, in 1954, into a Gujarati Jain family. His father, Uttambhai Nathalal Mehta (U. N. Mehta), established Trinity Laboratories in 1959, which was later rebranded as Torrent Pharmaceuticals. Sudhir received his bachelor's degree in science from Gujarat University in 1974. He also studied at DePauw University and the University of Chicago.
Rise to Success
Mehta joined the family business in the early 1970s, learning the intricacies of the pharmaceutical industry from his father. He played a key role in expanding Torrent Group, spearheading the commissioning of the first manufacturing facility in Ahmedabad and securing the company's inaugural export order to Russia. Under his leadership, the group diversified into the power sector through strategic acquisitions. In 2014, he transitioned to Chairman Emeritus, focusing on strategic oversight.
Key Business Strategies
Sudhir Mehta focused on expanding Torrent's international presence, driving growth in markets like Brazil, Russia, and Europe, and establishing multiple manufacturing plants. He emphasized innovation and timely execution in India's energy and healthcare sectors. He led the group's diversification into the power sector through acquisitions, and Torrent Gas was launched in 2018, becoming one of India's top city gas distribution companies.
Philanthropy
In 2024, Sudhir and his brother Samir pledged ₹5,000 crore (approximately $600 million) to the UNM Foundation over five years, honoring their father. This commitment focuses on community healthcare, education, environmental regeneration, and arts and culture.
