Early Life
Stéphane Bancel was born in Marseille, France. His father was an engineer, and his mother was a doctor. Bancel enjoyed science and mathematics during his childhood. He studied engineering at École Centrale Paris (CentraleSupélec) and biological engineering at the University of Minnesota, earning master's degrees at both institutions. He later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Bancel's career began at Eli Lilly and Company and bioMérieux SA, where he served as CEO. In 2011, he became the CEO of Moderna. Under his leadership, Moderna developed and commercialized the COVID-19 vaccine, which generated significant revenue and propelled the company to prominence.
