Early Life
Stanley Stub Hubbard was born in 1933. His father, Stanley E. Hubbard, founded Hubbard Broadcasting. He earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota.
Rise to Success
Hubbard's career in broadcasting began in 1951 at KSTP, the family's broadcasting company. He became President in 1967 and Chairman and CEO in 1983. Under his leadership, Hubbard Broadcasting expanded to include numerous radio and television stations. He also founded United States Satellite Broadcasting (USSB), a pioneering direct broadcast satellite service that later contributed to the formation of DirecTV.
Key Business Strategies
Hubbard's strategies included a focus on family ownership and technological adaptation. He resisted industry consolidation, maintaining Hubbard Broadcasting as one of the last independent broadcasters.
Philanthropy
Hubbard has supported the University of Minnesota with significant donations, including a $10 million gift in 2000 that led to the formation of the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
