Sri Prakash Lohia was born on August 11, 1952, in Kolkata, India. He was raised in a traditional Marwari business family, and his father was already a textile trader. He graduated from the University of Delhi with a bachelor's degree in commerce in 1971.

In 1973, Lohia moved to Indonesia with his father Mohan Lal Lohia and started Indorama Synthetics. The company began manufacturing spun yarns in 1976. Under Lohia's leadership, the company diversified into polyester fibers and PET resins. By the 1990s, the company had established itself as a leading player in the global polyester market. In 2006, Lohia acquired an integrated olefin plant in Nigeria, further expanding the company's reach.
