Smita Crishna Godrej was born into the Godrej family, a Parsi-Zoroastrian business dynasty in Mumbai, India. She is the third-generation heir to this influential family. Smita attended J. B. Petit High School for Girls in Mumbai and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Political Science from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. She also acquired a Diploma in Communication Arts (Television Production) from Loyola College (now Concordia University), Montreal.
